Press Release

1713 Space is pleased to announce an exhibition by Yan Cynthia Chen titled, Name, with generous support from Sugar Hill Capital Partners.

Name is an installation, including a 500LB. perforated plaster monolith, which evolved from a yearlong exploration of materials and mold making. The forms are derived, and inspired by architectural and organic structures, furniture, and found packaging. The resulting sculptures act as a record of the often-ephemeral forms from which they are cast.

A name is a reflection of an object, seen through the viewer’s subjective experience.

During this installation visitors will be asked to name and describe what they see. Viewers will assess objects on how they perform and occupy the space. The names and descriptions collected during the show will serve as a starting point for Chen’s continued investigations.
